Army Chief General Bipin Rawat will be the first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the country. The defense ministry made its formal announcement late Monday evening. He will command the three armies. As Chief of Defense Staff, he will work to coordinate between the three armies. He will take charge from Tuesday.
As the CDS, General Bipin Rawat will be the highest defense officer of the country and will take over the reins of the three armies. The army chiefs of the three armies will work under them. The CDS will report directly to the Defense Minister.

General Bipin Rawat’s term as army chief is coming to an end on 31 December. The demand for CDS post has been in place since the time of Kargil War. Only then was the recommendation for the country’s first CDS. The reasoning behind this was that it would lead to better harmony between the three armies and a better strategy could be devised in the event of war.
Where will be the office of Chief of Defense Staff?
The office of the Chief of Defense Staff will be in South Block. General Bipin Rawat will take charge in this office. After receiving the God of Honor, General Bipin Rawat will take charge on 1 January 2020.
CDS will be the Principal Military Advisor to the Defense Minister.
The responsibility of the Chief of Defense Staff is to advise the Defense Minister in matters related to the three forces. CDS will be the Chief Military Advisor to the Defense Minister . However, in special cases related to the military services, the Chief of the three Services will continue to advise the Defense Minister as before.
