India recently gave China a taste of its own medicine by taking pre-emptive control of strategic heights near the southern bank of the Pangong Tso lake, foiling an attempt by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army to transgress into Indian territory near Chushul in Ladakh.

While this can be considered a massive victory by the Indian Army against the intruding Chinese army, Ladakh Member of Parliament JT Namgyal on Thursday said that the locals are also willing to assist Indian soldiers in whichever way possible.

“I met Chushul village representatives yesterday. We spoke about the moral responsibility to assist the Indian Army as citizens of the country. The local civilians will wholeheartedly support the Army in their capacity,” Ladakh Member of Parliament JT Namgyal said.

While he stressed that tourism, which is the biggest revenue-generating occupation in the hilly expanse of the country, has taken a massive hit due to the coronavirus pandemic and now tensions along the Line of Actual Control, the local administration is trying to revive the local economy through various measures.

“Tourism is one of the most important revenue-generating & economy driving industries here. Due to Covid, there are no tourists here this year. But we are working to implement SOPs to combat Covid. Tourists can come here with their negative test reports,” Namgyal told news agency ANI.

The Indian Army earlier in the day said that they have taken control of strategic positions at Finger 4 area near the Pangong Tso lake. The Chinese troops have been stationed at Finger 4 since April-May and have refused to disengage from the position and other friction points in the eastern Ladakh region.
