No, there is ‘NO such plan’ of creating a separate Himachal Regiment, Indian Army defies rumours – Indian Defence Research Wing

The Indian Army, on Monday, clarified that it has ‘no plans’ of creating a separate Himachal Regiment. “There is NO such plan of creating a separate Himachal Regiment in the Indian Army,” Additional Directorate General of Public Interface (ADGPI), the official Twitter handle of the Indian Army said in a post. Urging people to ‘stay away from rumours’, the ADGPI further said, “Messages on Social Media are circulating about the creation of a #Himachal #Regiment having headquarters at #Kangra. Request guard against misinformation and #Fake messages (sic).”

A clarification by the Indian Army was offered after messages surfaced on social media, claiming that a special regiment was being created for the youth of the mountain state.

In one such message which was shared by the Army, youth were appealed to join the special regiment, which was supposedly headquartered in Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. “The officers will get recruited from routine exams, but jawans and JCOs will have origins from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Pathankot, Punjab,” a post, tagged as ‘fake’ by the Indian Army said.

This is, however, not the first time that the Himachal Regiment has found a mention. In June 2019, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to create a Himalayan Regiment in the Army, in a bid to provide employment to the ‘brave’ youth of his state.

Thakur had also said that the BJP government was committed to creating a Himachal Regiment in the Army after it returned to power in the Lok Sabha elections 2019. The Army has, however, made no references to such a regiment being under creation or work-in-progress.
